For extra credit,
and I also recommend Mystery and Manners, a book of O’Connor’s essays about writing. It’s optional supplemental reading, but it may give you more insight into O’Connor’s fiction.Frequently asked questions
What is a FrizzLit book club?
These are classes taught by English professors at the graduate level—but they’re open to everyone, we do them “book club style,” and we make them fun. There’s no homework except for reading the assigned reading each week.
Where and when do the classes take place?
All classes are held on Zoom. In this case, on Saturdays from 10 am to 11:30 am Pacific.
Are classes recorded?
Yes, all classes are recorded and sent out automatically to everyone signed up within 48 hours. So if you miss some or all of the live meetings, you won’t miss a thing.
Is financial aid available?
Yes. Thanks to the generosity of our donors. Apply here.
I'm so excited for this one! I picked up used copies of the books and when one arrived last night I flipped through it and found that it came with penciled-in notes from a previous reader. One of the insights included O'Connor's line "He wanted a private place to go to" underlined with the reader note "He wants to be alone."
I'm thinking we'll have some deeper observations!
I will be there, I just need to sign up! And I'm going to try to recruit a friend or two to join. I feel like Flannery O'Connor is someone that I lot of readers mean to read, and then just haven't, for whatever reason.
