Super Bowl counter-programming
Looking for something else to do on Super Bowl Sunday? Come to the afternoon Silent Reading Party

Because I have no interest in football, nor in watching commercials for crypto, I like to do the most non-sporty thing possible when the rest of the world is watching the Super Bowl.
In 2014 — when the Seahawks were playing in the Super Bowl — I spent the afternoon seeing Saving Mr. Banks. It’s that Emma Thompson movie about the making of Mary Poppins. Saw it in the movie theater. It was glorious. I cried when Walt Disney cried at the beauty of “Feed the Birds.”
As I left the cinema, I heard cheering and honking in the parking lot. Were they cheering on my decision to skip the game? That’s what it felt like. But I think they were cheering because the Seahawks had won.
Most people look at me like I’m insane when I tell them this story, but reading party musician Paul Matthew Moore is with me on this. We don’t mind that most people love the Super Bowl. We just aren’t those people.
So this year, Paul and I are tuning out the rah-rah cheering on of concussions and capitalistic consumption by having a Silent Reading Party at the Sorrento.
As of this moment, there are still good seats available for the February 9 party from 3 to 5 pm.
If you’re as bored by macho strutting and grunting as we are, join us!
We’re doing Sunday afternoon reading parties every other weekend through the end of winter.
There’s no Sunday party this weekend, but there is one next weekend, during the Super Bowl.
After that, the next Sunday afternoon party is February 23.
I went for a run the neighborhood during that game in 2014. Multiple people yelled and honked at me before I realized that I was wearing colors associated with the other team.
There's absolutely no end for the love I have for you, Chris. I despise football and, particularly, the Super Bowl. One year, I drove from Los Angeles to Ventura and went on an 8-hour whale-watching boat ride. I can't really get away right now, but I know what I'm going to do! The Silent Reading Party! Thank you!
