When I was a grad student in creative writing at Bennington Writing Seminars, I took a masterclass in Shakespeare’s sonnets.
It was taught by the poet April Bernard. I realized, through April’s comments and close readings and her deep knowledge based on reading and teaching Shakespeare, that I hadn’t really understood these sonnets before.
Now, because I want others to experience the magic of these sonnets—and April’s masterful telling of the mysteries that surround them—I have invited April to lead a summer poetry club focused exclusively on Shakespeare’s sonnets. And she said yes!
Oh, happy day. This will be on Monday nights in deep summer, one hour per session. More details here.
I’m so excited for this! I just finished listening to a podcast called Where There’s a Will, about Shakespeare’s continued relevance 500 years on. There’s an episode dedicated to the sonnets, and the host coaches two people through memorizing and understanding two of them. It was delightful!
