Quick reminder: you only have two more days to save 25% on the summer poetry club.
We’re calling it a club even though, like all FrizzLit clubs, it’s really a class. The teacher is the talented poet and professor April Bernard, who blew my mind teaching me these sonnets in grad school.
The club will meet on Zoom on Monday evenings. It doesn’t start till July 31, but the discounted price expires July 4.
How to join the club
Simply buy a ticket here. You will also need to get a book of Shakespeare’s sonnets, either from a bookstore or a library.
Which is the recommended edition?
For this particular club, it doesn’t matter. The sonnets are numbered, so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for in different editions.
Any book that has all 154 of them will work.
On the ticket page, I originally recommended The Oxford Shakespeare: Complete Sonnets and Poems (on the left) but after ordering it, and receiving what looked like a brick in the mail, I realized it may be overkill.
So I walked to Elliott Bay, perused their collection of Shakespeare’s sonnets, and selected two more that I like: one paperback and one hardback.
I think the inexpensive paperback (in the middle) is the way to go, because it has footnotes (as does the Oxford edition), it’s inexpensive, and the typeface is easy to read. The hardback (on the right) does not have footnotes, but its typeface is lovely and has a built-in bookmark. Up to you!
I got the Oxford edition too! If I want to leave home with it, and lug it around, I may need to acquire another version. Thanks for the tip!
